Desertion in the context of a marriage or divorce is when a spouse abandons his/her partner.
For example, a husband may say to his wife, "I'm leaving you", and pack up his things and go. Sometimes no notice of leaving would be given, in which case the critical question is whether the partner leaving the family home had the intention of returning.
